Icon Tutorial: Colouring, Text, and Borders

Go from to .

So first of all, we're going to work with the base. Crop your image, and resize it to 100x100. Sharpen it.
See how the face is all .. flawed? XD; Well, take your blur/soften tool and go over the skin, making it all pretteh and stuff! Be careful around the eyes, lips and hair though.
Now, take the Dodge brush and go over his eyes, just the far left side of the pupil. This makes the eye stand out more.
Now, go to Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Gamma Correction. I used these values to make the image a little more dark. Btw, you need not use this step if the icon is really pretty dark.
Next comes the colouring part! :D One of the most used steps in all my icons: the Exclusion layer. New layer: #090139, Exclusion, 100%.
New layer: #DECEB8, Multiply, 100%.
Gradient, made by me. New layer: Overlay, 100%. Now, if you think it looks ugly now, just wait another step, 'kay :D?
Duplicate your base and bring it to the top. Set it to Screen, 100%. See? Pretty again. :D You can either Merge All now, or link them all together.
Let's add a border. A gray 1px border followed by a 5px white border.
Now, see how the image is cut off by the border? I used the move tool (after the merging/linking step!) to move it a little to the right and down. You can stop here, but I added some text. :3
Tiny text, that is. I used a brush by [info]ewanism and put two lines there. To make it stand out a little more, I duplicated the layer and did a Gaussian Blur at 1.00. The individual layer looked like this.
You can see how much a difference that makes. :D
Nowww.. text. I used a small font, JoaoCond-Light at size 6. My text was B A N G and put it right on top of the tiny text. But see, the text was a little too light. I did the step before, but this time, I took the Soften/Blur tool and went over the duplicated layer with that. It should look like this.
There. Now the text is all bright and can be seen clearly. That's the end of this icon! :D

I hope you found this useful :O Remember the use of a tutorial isn't to copy directly, but to try out different styles and adapt them to your own style. :D

Here are some more examples of this style:

Now, can anyone tell me what these three people have in common...? >D You'll get a cookie if you're right! Thanks for riding the Berri-Express and I'd love to see you all here again!

Great tutorial. I got a little lost in the gradient part, wasn't quite sure what to do with the gradient, but I fiddled with it until I got the look I liked.

*flies into the comment section flailing* I made this icon using your tutorials!!! SQUEEE! It's not even half as good as some I've seen, but truthfully, it's the best icon I've ever made. I finally understand textures, which is a major plus, but brushes still elude me. Hmm.. I can learn, though. Thankies!!!

XDD; Yay! :D the only squick I've got with the icon is the font, really. :D I suggest dafont.com to find some pretty fonts. :D

February 23 2007, 20:36:00 UTC 5 years ago

Sorry, I assumed everyone would know already :D; You just take your brush, set it to the colour you want, set it to 1px for size and go around the entire icon. You can click on one corner, press Shift and then click on the adjacent corner, while pressing Shift all the while. You can experiment if you don't understand what I'm talking about. :D
